Regular” Centering Prayer Intensives have a major educational component, both with the first day having an in-depth “refresher” look at the practice itself, and then 5 days during which you see 2 videos per day from Fr. Keating’s Spiritual Journey tapes. Also staff will be reading aloud from Open Mind, Open Heart during the breakfast and lunch meals. You are thus able to get more immersed in the principles and conceptual background of this spiritual practice with a Regular Intensive. The group prayer periods for these retreats are offered in 20 minute segments for the first few days and then in .30 minute segments.
Post Intensives, (8 or 10 days) are designed for those who have a strong foundation about centering prayer fairly well in place. The focus on a Post Intensive retreat is on the practice itself. The Post is much more silent than the Regular Intensive retreats, in that no videos are shown, all meals are in silence and no staff person is reading to you. Further, the meditation sits are done in 30 minute segments and during the majority of the days retreatants are expected to honor Grand Silence, when you are asked not to even make eye contact with your fellow retreatants. Typically most participants on the Post Intensives have been doing the practice fairly long, so the silence can be very deep.
Hybrid – intensive and post run simultaneously (8 or 10 days)
Contemplative Listening Post Post Retreats are scheduled in May (10 day) and November (8 day). This retreat is a deeper dive into silence with very limited content of John Osborne asking Thomas Keating questions about the spiritual journey in a special edition DVD. This film will be shown in five minute clips, one or two per day. There will be no discussion. There will be 3 - thirty minute sits of Centering Prayer three times a day which will allow for a potential of 4.5 hours of community sitting practice per day.
12 Step friendly retreat, this particular retreat welcomes those currently engaged in a 12 step program of any kind and focuses on the 11th step. The retreat itself is structured just like a post, though 2 optional 12 step meetings are offered during the course of the retreat. For those in 12-step programs this retreat will be an opportunity to become more steeped in centering prayer as an ELEVENTH-step practice.
7 day 12 step friendly retreat, this retreat, our shortest, incorporates spiritual teachers such as Keating, Rohr, Bourgeault, sharing their wisdom on DVDs/CDs. Similar to a post, the retreat offers at least 1 optional open 12 step meeting.
